Boeing Machinists Accept Contract Offer, Won’t Strike

Time: 6/27/2010 12:44:00 PM

Boeing Co. machinists at a St. Louis fighter-jet plant won’t strike tomorrow after voting today to accept a proposed contract that will put new workers in a 401(k)-style pension.

The four-and-a-half year contract was accepted by a vote of 1,237 to 838, two weeks after union members rejected the contract.

“There will be no strike,” said Tom Pinski, a spokesman for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers district 837. The union represents about 2,500 machinists. A strike would have halted production of F-15 and F- 18 jets.

The contract leaves in a place a Boeing proposal to put workers hired after January 2012 into a 401(k)-style plan rather than a defined benefit plan. The agreement calls for a 3 percent wage increase in the second through fifth years, Pinski said. The company removed language that would have dropped dependents’ medical coverage if an employee was on medical leave for more than six months, he said.

“I’m not sure they were voting in favor of the 401(k) plan, they were voting that Boeing would be adamant enough and harsh enough that even if they went on strike they still would not be able to retain a defined pension plan,” Pinski said.

Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares Looks Bearish on Money Flow

source:learningmarkets.com
Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) gained some ground during trading yesterday, but it appears there is some bearish pressure building up in the background. Looking at yesterday's money flows, $6.13 million left the stock. Only $74.37 million flowed into the stock on uptick trades while $68.24 million flowed in on downtick trades---giving FAS an up/down ratio of 92/100.

The question is, will FAS continue rising or will increasing bearish sentiment help turn things around and start pushing the stock price lower? FAS has lost 14.18% during the past month and is currently trading above its 20-day moving average but below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

Shares in Tellabs Inc (TLAB.O) were down 6.3 percent on Tuesday after Morgan Stanley downgraded the telecommunications equipment maker's shares, citing an expectation that AT&T Inc (T.N) would switch to Cisco Systems (CSCO.O).

Tellabs shares fell 44 cents to $6.37 on Nasdaq after Morgan Stanley analyst Ehud Gelblum said AT&T is planning a "relatively quick transition away from" Tellabs 8860 router to a product from Cisco about a year from now.

AT&T, which brought in 21 percent of Tellabs revenue in 2009, declined comment as did Cisco.

CORNING, N.Y., May 17, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Corning Incorporated /quotes/comstock/13*!glw/quotes/nls/glw (GLW 17.90, -0.06, -0.33%) President and Chief Operating Officer Peter F. Volanakis will tell investors today that "all of our businesses, including our equity ventures, are on track with our expectations for the second quarter" when he speaks at the J.P. Morgan Technology Conference in Boston at 8:40 a.m. Corning's comments at the conference can be heard via webcast at www.corning.com/investor_relations.

Industry data indicates that retail demand for LCD TVs, notebooks, and monitors remains robust. April LCD TV unit sales increased 13% in the U.S. over last year. Similarly, unit sales in Europe and Japan increased 22% and 44%, respectively. "These growth rates continue to run ahead of our internal forecasts," Volanakis will say. The retail data is the result of reports from a variety of independent consumer market research organizations (NPD, GFK and CMM) and the company's internal analysis.

In China, LCD TV demand appears to remain strong as well. "We do not yet have April retail data for China, but there are no indications that consumers' appetite has abated," Volanakis will say. "Incentive programs continue and retail prices are very attractive. As a result, we still see 37 million LCD TV unit sales in China this year."
